How to install 3.5″ dash speakers? What connection do I need?
My car is a 1988 Olds 98. It has a dual wire female plug which attached to two prongs on the OEM speakers. The new speakers have the two connecting prongs, but I cannot plug these prongs in. I need an adapter/connector for the Olds plug. Where to find? Thanks for your help
Excellent question.
There are adapters available to convert the OEM speaker plugs over to the standard aftermarket terminals. The part you are looking for is available from a few manufactures though I would not say any one is superior to another.
The part # is 72-4500 from metra (www.metraonline.com)
Now you can spend $15.00 or you can take two minutes and convert the plugs yourself.
Still reading….Ok, here we go.
things you will need:
the wires that came with the speakers ( if you don’t have
them you will need wire and teminals that fit your speaker
if you need them stop by a local shop and if their cool they
will just give you what you need. )
crimp teminals or solder and tape to connect wires in the
car
a nine volt battery

remove the OEM speaker and cut the plug that plugs into the speaker. LEAVE AN INCH OR SO OF WIRE ATTACHED TO THE PLUG.
strip back the wires on the plug you just cut out of the car
plug it back into the speaker
use a 9 volt battery and touch the striped back wires to the terminals of the battery ( one wire on each post )
note the direction the cone of the speaker moves. if it moves in on itself you have the positive and negitive backwards. If it moves outward than you guessed right.
note the wire color that you touched to the positive and negitive respectfully
strip back the wires in the car and the harness that came with the speakers and connect them making sure that pos. goes to pos. and neg to neg. ( the positive is the larger of the two plugs on the aftermarket plug)
mount your speaker and your done.
